Going on vacation is the best, regardless if you’re heading abroad or planning a staycation… On the other hand, something that isn’t always as fun is trying to squeeze your cutest outfits into your suitcase. Also, the anxiety of figuring out what to pack (and how to make it all fit) can add a bit of stress to your pre-getaway excitement. To your rescue, we’ve put together some savvy packing tips. No matter if you’re someone who starts packing a week ahead of departure or waits until the last minute, these hacks will ensure that your favorite outfits don’t get wrinkled and leave room for unexpected shopping and souvenirs. Keep reading to learn how to pack faster, smarter, and without stress.
1. Start with a packing list and plan your outfits
Packing should always begin with a clear list of what to pack. The human brain loves lists and especially right before a trip when you’re stressed about all the things to prep before going on vacation. We’ve all been there, halfway to our destination realizing we forgot this and that. That’s why we suggest you always make a packing list to keep yourself organized! Lack of time? Well, then you can always google “packing list” to get a basic idea of what you should bring on your getaway.
2. Know your airline or train company’s luggage fee policy
If you’re traveling by plane or train (yes, some train companies don’t allow big bags), we highly suggest you to check out the luggage regulations. Do yourself a favor and research, you’re going to thank yourself later. No one wants to pay for being overweight neither for not being well prepared.
3. Roll your clothes This is a game-changer!
You’ll fit more clothes and necessities in your bag and prevent creases and wrinkles. Win-win!
4. Pack the heaviest items on the bottom of your bag
Yep, Placing shoes (preferably in plastic or shoe bags in order to not stain your beautiful clothes) at the bottom of your bag will give stability yet even out the weight of the luggage.
5. Always pack your essentials, liquids, important medication, and one outfit change in your hand luggage
You never know what happens, the airline company might lose your bag or you accidentally forget it at the train station (we hope you won’t). Just to be sure you won’t lose the crucial items, keep them close to you.
6. Bring an extra tote bag for souvenirs
This is never a bad idea. A tote bag is foldable and takes up 0 space in your luggage. If you won’t shop anything, you could also use it for shoes or laundry, or even as a beach bag.
7. Bring 2 laundry bags One for light garments and one for black.
This will make the coming home unpacking process way easier. And it’s nice and hygienic to keep your dirty clothes and underwear at one place.
8. Forget full sized liquids
Invest in reusable travel-sized jars and bottles that you can refill for every trip. These are super convenient and way more sustainable than buying mini-sized products over and over again.
9. Never pack things “just in case”
We all know that the “just in case” items probably won’t come to use anyway. Go through your packing list and pick out the essentials. No one wants to carry nor pay for extra kilos.
10. Avoid over and under-packing
Referring to the previous point, over-packing is a bad idea since you might have to carry a heavy bag or if you’re unlucky you might receive a fee for being overweight. Under-packing may result in increased clothes and damaged items since your packing most likely will roll around in the bag. Find a balance.
11. Carry a reusable water bottle
Good for you and good for the planet
To summarize, think Tetris! The best way to fit everything into one bag: Fill every centimeter of space with some air in between. For example, footwear should be stuffed with socks, and lay your shoes together heel to toe at the bottom of your bag. How exactly you arrange everything is a matter of personal preference. You can do it! Have a safe trip!
